Combining the renowned Swiss Army Knife's multi-tool versatility and a detachable Swissbit MP3 digital audio player, this three-inch-long device goes from office to hiking trail while looking cool in both settings and all those between. The detachable audio player plugs into any Windows or Macintosh computer with a USB port and also can be used to transport images and other data. Its lithium battery recharges automatically whenever the audio player is connected to a USB interface and lasts up to eight hours. A fetching remote control displaying the Swiss Army Knife's famed Swiss-flag logo of white cross against a red background has two earphone jacks. (One set of earphones, with adjustable neck and arm straps and anti-dangling mechanism, and belt clip are included.) The silver-metal Swiss Army Knife housing that stores the audio player offers a knife blade, a combination nail file and screw driver, a scissors, a retractable ballpoint pen, a LED mini light, and a key ring.
To pass airport-security checks, the audio player detaches from the Swiss Army Knife housing, with a cap to protect the USB interface.

Being a fan of Swiss Army products, I was waiting for the 2GB version of this device to show up at a reasonable price. When I got it, I really liked the small size and the fact that it supports what people call "USB On The Go" which simply means that your computer will recognize it as a flash drive and you can copy MP3 files to it without any special or proprietary software. It also has it's own USB connector so you don't even need a cable. Now for the bad news. There is *no* support for playlists and *no* support for playing based on the folder structure, even though the documentation implies that these things are supported. To be clear, the documentation states that it supports the ability to create a playlist in, for example, Windows Media Player and then "sync" with the device. This does work, but you can't access the playlist once the music is on the device, and there's no guarantee the files will play back in the order you specify in the playlist. This is really a deal-breaker for me since it misses the point of why people create playlists in the first place. A third (somewhat related) flaw is that, when you try to play by "CD" (i.e., the ID3 "Album" tag), it messes up the sorting and plays things in the wrong order, even though I'm fanatical about making sure my file name ordering and ID3 "Track" tags are 100% right. I'm going to try to contact the Swiss Army people and see if they will accept suggestions for firmware fixes but if I don't get a quick response this thing is going back.

This is my second SwissBit knife... had to replace one that was purloined from my checked baggage during a Hawaii trip. I loved my old one, and love this one even more. The flash drive works great, and resides in a practical pocket knife that is small enough to keep on one's person every day. The white LED light is better than the old red one... is now a practical light source for close-in work. The device is more than durable enough to carry around daily... my old one survived a trip through the washer and dryer, working perfectly afterward, and absolutely wrinkle-free to boot. The SwissBit does all it advertises and for me is an easy way to have a flash drive with me everywhere but in the shower. (I never was a lanyard kinda guy) Everytime I use it among "civillians" it gets great comments. Highly recommended.

The SwissMemory I purchased is only a flash drive but is a very good design and quality. Have not tried to get it by TSA yet so that should be interesting. Highly recommended.

I've had my Swissbit for about two-and-a-half years. I always have it with me for little data emergencies and use it to store freelance projects. It's my the third flash drive I've owned, and although it cost a little more, it has held up so much better. I never had data problems, but the housings for my other drives (One was a Sony and the other was a no-name brand) eventually cracked and fell apart. Not so with the Swissbit. Plus it's incredibly handy to have a pocketknife with me. I've used all the tools at one time or another. No problems, and I use it almost every day on both my Mac and my work PC. The twist is the USB drive. It works great but the plastic sleeve on the drive is not worthy if being in this knife. It is flimsy and will break. Mine did after only a handful of removals from the knife. It still works after some super glue and I just use it separately as a thumb drive. I now have a nice pen knife with a big hole in it. If your are not going to ever remove it from the knife it is fine. An aluminum or steel sleeve with a steel hook instead of plastic would make all the difference. Plastic=Cheap/Flimsy, Not what this brand is known for. Just buy them separate.

I picked up my drive about 2 years ago. I kept it in my pocket except when flying, and found the small form factor convenient, useful and rugged enough to carry without worry. Because it "lived" in my pants pocket when not in use, it was probably inevitable that it would be put to the Laundry Test. Sure enough, after my jeans went through the machines on one occasion, my SwissBit clattered to the bottom of the dryer drum. I was surprised and impressed when it worked flawlessly afterward. More than I expected, for sure. Alas, my trusty SwissBit was "lost" from a locked suitcase during a commercial flight 2 days ago. I'm online now looking for another. The device has done all that was asked of it and more, with the bonus of being a fun novelty, even among propellerheads.

I wanted to buy one SAK that had everything I wanted in it without having too much extra, and I ended up with the Locksmith. It's definitely a bigger (length AND width) knife and, perhaps, too big to always carry in your pocket, but it's not so big that you couldn't carry it in your pocket. Actually, I've got it in my pocket right now, but, for real, it is on the bigger side of "pocket knife." The great size makes for some great capabilities though, and the Locksmith is, like all Victorinox SAK's, of great quality. The liner-lock blade design functions well and still lets the knife keep the look of a real SAK. The scales are not made of cellidor or Alox but are of Nylon - gives it a lightweight plastic feeling which isn't the greatest, but it's still durable and tasteful - and heck it's in black. What more could you want?
